Cursor Ai Guide

Cursor is an AI-powered code editor that helps you write, edit, understand, debug, and build software using natural-language instructions.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Visit the Official Cursor Website

Open your browser and visit the official Cursor website.

Open Cursor AI Official Website

On the homepage, look for Download or Get Cursor.

Cursor describes itself as an AI code editor designed to help developers build software with AI assistance.

Step 2: Download Cursor

Click Download or open the official downloads page.

Download Cursor for Windows, Mac or Linux

Choose the version that matches your computer:

  • Windows 10/11 x64
  • Windows ARM64
  • macOS
  • Linux x64
  • Linux ARM64

The official download page lists installers for these platforms.

Step 3: Install Cursor on Your Computer

After downloading the installer:

  1. Open the downloaded Cursor installer.
  2. Follow the installation instructions.
  3. Wait for the installation to finish.
  4. Launch Cursor.

According to Cursor’s official installation documentation, installation takes only a few minutes

Step 4: Complete the First-Time Setup

When Cursor opens for the first time, it takes you through an initial setup.

You may be asked to configure:

  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Theme
  • Terminal preferences
  • Other editor preferences

Cursor’s official documentation confirms that these settings are part of the first-time setup process.

Choose the options that suit your workflow and continue.

Step 5: Create or Log In to Your Cursor Account

Cursor can be used without an account for some functionality, but signing in unlocks its AI features.

During setup, Cursor may ask you to sign up or log in.

Choose the available sign-in option and complete the authentication process in your browser.

You can also manage your account through the Cursor dashboard.

Open Cursor Dashboard

Step 6: Open Your Coding Project

After logging in, you can open an existing project.

From Cursor:

  1. Click Open Folder.
  2. Select your project folder.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Wait for Cursor to load your project.

Cursor automatically starts indexing an opened project so that its AI can understand the codebase and provide more relevant assistance.

Step 7: Ask Cursor AI to Write or Modify Code

Now you can use natural language to tell Cursor what you want.

For example:

Create a responsive login page using HTML and CSS.

Or:

Find the error in this Python code and fix it.

Cursor can generate code and make targeted changes based on natural-language instructions.

Step 8: Use Cursor Chat and Agent

Cursor provides AI-assisted workflows for working with your codebase.

You can ask questions such as:

  • “Explain this code.”
  • “Find the bug in this function.”
  • “Add authentication to this project.”
  • “Create a responsive navbar.”
  • “Improve the performance of this component.”
  • “Write tests for this function.”

Current Cursor also provides agentic workflows where you can give the AI larger software-development tasks rather than manually editing every line yourself.

Step 9: Review and Accept AI Changes

After Cursor generates or modifies code, review the changes before accepting them.

Check:

  • Whether the code does what you requested
  • Whether existing functionality was changed
  • Whether there are errors
  • Whether security issues were introduced
  • Whether tests still pass

Cursor’s interface is designed to let developers work with AI-generated edits directly inside the code editor.

Step 10: Run and Test Your Project

Finally, test the code Cursor created.

You can use Cursor’s integrated terminal to run commands such as:

npm run dev

or, depending on your project:

python app.py

Check the application and return to Cursor if you find an error. You can then ask Cursor to investigate and fix it.

Cursor also supports codebase understanding and AI-assisted development workflows that can help you continue improving the project.

Quick Cursor AI Workflow

Download → Install → Sign Up/Login → Open Project → Let Cursor Index → Ask AI → Review Changes → Test → Build

Beginner Prompt to Try

Create a simple responsive personal portfolio website with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Include a navigation bar, hero section, about section, projects section,
contact form and responsive mobile design.

Cursor is particularly useful because you can describe the desired change in natural language rather than manually writing every line of code.

Important Tip

Always review and test AI-generated code before deploying it to a real website or production application. AI coding tools can make incorrect assumptions or introduce bugs.
